McDonald’s: Ban Guns in Your Restaurants and Speak Out Against Gun Violence

The Issue

Every day, millions of families walk through the doors of McDonald’s locations across America. Parents bring their kids in for a Happy Meal. Workers grab coffee before their shifts. But behind the golden arches, there’s a dangerous silence.

McDonald’s has no public policy banning guns in its restaurants—leaving it up to state laws or individual managers to decide whether customers can carry firearms, even openly.

In a country with rising incidents of gun violence, that’s not just outdated—it’s unsafe.

To make matters worse, McDonald’s political action committee has donated tens of thousands of dollars to lawmakers backed by the NRA, and over a quarter of a million dollars to members of Congress who denied the results of the 2020 election. These are the same politicians who continue to block life-saving gun safety reforms that the majority of Americans support.

At the same time, McDonald’s has shown it understands the stakes. In recent years, the company donated $3.5 million to organizations in Chicago, including one focused on gun violence prevention. That’s a good start—but it’s not enough. Not when your restaurants may still allow customers to bring in guns.

We’re calling on McDonald’s to:

  • Immediately adopt a nationwide policy banning firearms in all customer-facing stores and drive-thrus.
  • Make a public statement in support of meaningful, evidence-based gun violence prevention.
  • Stop contributing to politicians who are backed by the gun lobby or who undermine democracy.

McDonald’s says it wants to be a good corporate citizen. That means protecting the people who walk into its restaurants and taking a stand for the communities it serves.

Sign this petition and help show McDonald’s that silence is not neutrality—and safety starts with action.
