Well, I finally received a response from County Executive Candidate Barry Buchanan. He states, "I agree that direct fiber is the best choice for all the reasons you state and a Dig Once policy is a no-brainer for me."
So I wanted to say thank you to him. I stopped endorsing candidates years ago, as many would make statements and then never follow through on their promises, but I am happy that Barry is brave enough to at least get the whole story on fiber.
Still, our needs remain the same and we need candidates to commit in public to the following:
1. Establishing a Real Dig Once Policy like Anacortes, Hillsborough, OR, Chattanooga, TN, etc. have.
2. Publicly Owned Fiber to the Premises (Preferably from a municipal provider but at least open access. Mount Vernon has a successful Open Access network).
3. Funding a proper RRUL (network load test) based study. Like the one I proposed to the County Council that only cost $11K that Barry's opponent, Satpal Sidhu, intentionally killed so he could turn around and waste $100K with his friends on an inaccurate, pro big telecom, browser based study instead. https://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/codel/wiki/RRUL_test_suite/
4. Access to the city's existing publicly owned network with planned upgrades.
5. City Council candidates need to commit to firing ultra-corrupt public works director Eric Johnston who put together a pretend Broadband Advisory Group, with voting members from big telecom on it, to protect special interests.
Every candidate needs to weigh in on this issue. It literally effects the quality of life of every citizen in Whatcom County especially the homeless whose lack of internet access keeps them from finding jobs, permanent housing, participating in telehealth opportunities, participating in online educational opportunities and much more.
And no, the obsolete big telecom connections provided to the poor are not good enough. Most are virtually worthless, as proper load testing shows. Which is why Satpal blocked it.
Alicia Rule is still refusing to provide an updated answer on the issue too. If she follows in the footsteps of her friends in politics she'll pretend to care, then once in office, protect big telecom. I'd love for her to prove me wrong but she never has.
