Justice for Genesta Garson
The Issue
We can no longer stand by and allow police brutality and violence against our indigenous community members. We demand:
1) Mayor & City Council ensure that the CSO that brutally assaulted Genesta Garson is not only fired, but charged for his crimes (including but not limited to assault, abuse of power, duty to rescue, etc.)
2) The Crown and Law Enforcement Review Agency not only make sure that the CSO is charged but ensure that Genesta Garson is able to lay charges if she wishes without being harassed for it.
3) The Canadian government (Municipal, Provincial, and Federal) ensure that individuals who are pressing charges against CSO and RCMP are protected from RCMP and CSO harassment (ie. visiting someone's home or workplace trying to get them to drop the charges) thereby making sure that what happened to Genesta doesn't happen again and our voices are no longer silenced.
4) The Federal government and the City of Thompson pay Genesta Garson 1 million dollars for the hate crime committed and any physical/emotional trauma as a result of her assault and medical neglect. She could have died.
5) The Federal, Provincial, and municipal government make a public statement acknowledging the blatant racism in their employees and promise to do better.
6) The Federal, Provincial, and municipal government make a public statement acknowledging the failure of the CSO, RCMP, and the following investigation that found the RCMP and CSO to be "within their rights" to punch out a young native girl and instead of calling an ambulance, dragging her into a cell and undressing her. All three branches of government need to promise to make sure this never happens again and most importantly, tell us HOW they plan to ensure this.
7) Have better training for RCMP & CSO that includes cultural proficiency (including the Blanket Exercise), LGBT awareness, Mental Health First Aid, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, and the best NVCI available (one that focuses on the least restrictive and harmful restraints and focuses mainly on verbal de-escalation techniques as the primary method used)
