Give Madison and Dane County Residents an understanding of the tradeoffs of energy policy

The Issue

Our green energy future must not only be clean, but fair and that means making sure that there aren't downstream effects from our actions today: The answers to these questions are the beginning of a dialogue to make sure that the actions we take to secure our communities future do not hurt people down the line.

Does the City of Madison have a recycling strategy in place for solar waste? If not, where will the solar waste be stored?
Are we aware of sourcing of panels to city and county installations?
Do any of the panels trace their origin to Xinjiang Province in China which is the site of an ongoing genocide along with the possible slave labor concerns that may also arise?
From the article: "Economic incentives are rapidly aligning to encourage customers to trade their existing panels for newer, cheaper, more efficient models"
What plans are in place to ensure that as panels may get replaced much sooner than their 30 year lifecycle would indicate that these panels do not end up in a land fill as chemicals from panels could leach into the water table?

 Dark Side of Solar Power

Solar Panel Waste: The Dark Side of Clean Energy

The Real Solar-Panel Price Crisis Hasn’t Begun Yet Averting climate change could turn on whether the industry can become less dependent on Xinjiang and still keep up supply of a vital raw material.
