Ban Plastic Bags and Straws in Madison, WI
The Issue
Support our City in banning harmful, unnecessary plastics!! We need to create a climate of change and gain control over our plastic usage!!
Our environment is being overwhelmed by the use of unnecessary plastics and is literally drowning in them. It can take up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose. Just take a look along our highways and cities in the Madison area. We would like to ban the distribution of single-use bags and plastic straws from restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, retail stores, and other small business establishments within the capital of Wisconsin.
A lot of the pollution in Wisconsin is invisible and hard to see. We have microplastics and chemical particles that go into our lakes, streams, etc. that swallow up oxygen and kills the fish. The aquatic creatures may mistake these plastics as food which can clog up their digestive system-also leading to a rather unfortunate, yet preventable death. The plastics we use once are what effects the animal and plant life forever. There are safer alternatives that'll lead to a happy life for us and our environment.
According to a rather recent post by National Geographic, only 9% of the plastic that's ever been produced has been recycled properly, meaning the rest is either in landfills, water sources, or littered throughout the natural environment where plastic doesn't belong. Our mass production era of plastics started only 6 decades ago, and we already have over 8 billion metric tons of plastic produced, and 91% of it not properly recycled. Our Earth's system cannot be prepared for this type of rapid increase, which is why it's seeping from waste systems into the oceans worldwide. 8 million tons of plastic gets dumped into the oceans annually.
The average time span of plastic degradability takes 400 years, and most of it exists to this day. So far, 12% has incinerated from waste locations, meaning the vast majority ends up at the final stop-oceans. Due to our increase in plastic production, the environment can no longer manage the damage. But if we put limitations on the manufacturing, we will be able to grip control on plastic pollution along with other earth-friendly alternatives to plastic such as genetically modified corn plastic, polylactic acid that takes as little as 45 to 90 days to degrade.
