Create a statue of Marvin Hagler in Brockton

The Issue

Brockton is the City of Champions.

On March 13, 2021, arguably the greatest Middleweight boxer ever to live, passed away. "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler came to Brockton as a child.  For decades represented Brockton in the ring, with honor and toughness, compiling an exemplary 63-3-2 record. Marvin knocked out 52 men and was never stopped himself.

It took him 50 fights before he was given a long overdue title shot. The fight was ruled a draw. Marvin wasn't given a rematch. He had to go to England to win his championship. He fought a man named Alan Minter who swore he'd never lose the title to a black man. When Marvin smashed him in 3 rounds the British fans rioted. The title was given to Marvin in the locker room.

His 7 years as champion were a monument to an unrelenting work ethic and utter determination. Only Roberto Duran and Ray Leonard made the final bell with Marvin as champion. In 1987 Marvin retired after the controversial split decision loss to Leonard. Still one of the most debated boxing matches in history. Marvin retired in disgust.

In his retirement he went to Italy and became a movie star. Marvin never forgot his roots. He sat on the board of trustees for Massasoit Community College and awarded scholarships to students in desperate need of financial aid. His words and effort outside the ring, every bit as earnest and determined as he was between the ropes.

We ask the mayor and city council of Brockton to enshrine this great champion.   With hope that the legacy and example of Marvelous Marvin Hagler be properly remembered, just as Rocky Marciano's is. To inspire future generations to similar ambition and grit in pursuit of their goals.

Brockton is the City of Champions. Let us pay homage to another champion gone too soon. And live up to that moniker, just as Marvin lived up to his.
