Bring Dog Training Back to Honolulu’s Parks!
The Issue
The City and County of Honolulu has loosened COVID restrictions to allow people to enjoy outdoor youth and adult sports at parks. Enjoying outdoor recreational activities is important to returning to some sort of normalcy. However, dog training clubs who have utilized the parks (with permits) for several years have been overlooked and NOT given the same consideration.
Having access to training fields at parks for obedience, agility, and other dog training classes is just as important to dog enthusiasts as it is to youth and adult sports teams. Dog training and socialization is important not only to build a better relationship with our pets, but to also make our communities safer.
There are hundreds of dog owners across Oahu that participate in some type of training classes and activities. We have less participants on the field than other outdoor sports/activities so it would seem our risk of spreading the virus is lower. So why are we still not allowed to use the City parks?
We urge Mayor Blangiardi to give us the same consideration as he has done for other permitted park users and allow dog training clubs to use the parks once again!
