Dave Tubergen started this petition to Mayor of Morganton and County Commissioners

Keep the Morganton Confederate Soldier who has come home to Burke County after enduring a horrible war.  He is the symbol of Burke County children who were able to come home, many brothers in arms are listed below his feet, some white, a couple black soldiers whose names are inscribed on all four sides of the Monument.  Burke County lost a lot of their men to the war and they should never be forgotten.  These Burke County men paid the ultimate price for their freedoms.  The hate over this symbol is misguided by children who do not necessarily see the bigger picture of the history lessons that can be taught over this monument to our local boys.  This statue was put up many years ago when the people were still mourning the dead and they wanted to put up the monument to respect their dead and missing.  It was their choice to put up a plain soldier.  Their voices are not being heard or considered when talking about a statue.  This soldier was a grunt in the war and he did his duty and obligation to the local folks.  This is no statue of confederate War Hero Samuel McDowell Tate of Morganton history but that of a local boy who was lucky enough to come home to Burke County.  Burke County's history is on the line, do you want the history of Burke to be remembered as a 2020 event that ruined over a 100 years of history.  Please support this petition to keep the monument at the Burke County courthouse in Morganton, NC.
