We believe that the residents of Methuen, MA may not be getting treated fairly with regards to the collection of motor vehicle excise taxes.

More than one resident has expressed concerns about never receiving their motor vehicle excise tax bill in the mail and then getting a bill in the mail with a "demand notice" with an additional demand fee and interest penalties. The City of Methuen does not provide any means to check your bill online unless you know the bill number. This of course does nobody any good if they never receive the bill in the first place because they wouldn't know the bill number.  The City of Methuen tax collector offices states that there is nothing that can be done once the demand notice has been issued even if you never received a bill in the mail. The burden to pay the tax bill is on the taxpayer even if they have never received the bill.

We respectively request the mayor of the City of Methuen to look into this matter and provide Methuen tax payers with a modern online account access to all tax monies due to the city so that tax payers can avoid unnecessary penalties, interest and fees due to paper bills getting lost in the mail.
