Remove the statue of Philip Sheridan and Rename Sheridan Circle in Washington, D.C.

The Issue

We agree that the equestrian statue of General Philip Sheridan should be removed from Sheridan's Circle in Washington, D.C.

We agree that General Sheridan has committed crimes against the people of the United States as an officer of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War and the Great Plains Indian Wars of the 1870s.

We agree that General Sheridan knowingly destroyed 400 square miles of private property owned by non-combatants in the Shenandoah Valley in the fall of 1864.  This was a violation of the Articles of War adopted in 1863.  Property destroyed included homes, barns, crops, and livestock.

We agree that General Sheridan's campaign against the Great Plains Indians in the 1870s resulted in the destruction of an entire culture of American Indians.  He knowingly violated the Medicine Lodge Treaty and the Fort Laramie Treaty.  He systemically destroyed millions of bison to achieve his aim of conquering American Indians.  He gave orders that resulted in massacres, death, and the loss of millions of acres of American Indian lands.

We agree that General Sheridan's comment to Comanche Chief Towasi in 1869, "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" is incompatible with modern American values.

We agree that General Sheridan's statue should be disposed of immediately and that Sheridan's Circle be renamed.  General Sheridan does not represent the American tradition of liberty, freedom, trust, tolerance, and respect for all citizens of the United States.
