Oral Nunis and his family deserve justice
The Issue
Early morning of March 13, 2020, Oral Nunis was killed after what has consistently been labeled as a "struggle" with two Chula Vista police officers (three other officers were reported at the scene). Mr. Nunis was potentially attempting to self-harm himself and his family was who called the police to assist with de-escalating the situation. Mr. Nunis needed help. His family was in distress. Yet, Mr. Nunis ended up dying in yet another instance of a civilian being killed by the police. Yet, if you Google "Oral Nunis", you'll see articles with keywords describing him as "combative" and "uncooperative", attempting to discredit Mr. Nunis and absolve the cops.
From the research that I've attempted to gather, there was supposedly an investigation and the officers involved in his death were placed on "three-day administrative leave". But, that's where the public information on this case ends.
This happened in my hometown of Chula Vista, where I grew up. This hit home for me. Oral Nunis shouldn't be dead. I'm asking for this case to be thoroughly followed up on and for these officers to face a jury of their peers. Another death at the hand of police officers cannot go ignored.
