Why this petition matters

Started by Apryl Anglin

The town of Smyrna's vision is to be a "safe, attractive town of opportunities for it's citizens".

On the night of March 2nd until the morning of March 3rd, 2020 an EF-4 tornado struck our beautiful state of Tennessee that stretched for 50 miles. At least 25 people lost their lives and about 77 others are still missing.

There has been a lot of talk and questions as to why our town does not have any tornado sirens.

Yes, it's true- cell phones, radio alerts, and television updates are great tools to warn people about immediate danger. Although, many people do not take these updates seriously until it is too late. Minimizing the delays between warnings and people's reactions CAN and WILL save lives.

Tornado sirens can typically be heard within a 1-2 mile radius and are typically used to warn people outside. There are several different types of sirens such as mechanical sirens, electric sirens, and sirens that rotate.

Tornado sirens can be effective in places where cell phone use is not permitted or normally used. For example, a golf course. There are several locations we could  place tornado sirens: Lee victory Rec Park, Motlow State Community College, Smyrna High school, etc...

Smyrna is our home.

But we could make it safer.

That's why I'm reaching out to our council members to consider implementing tornado sirens into our town.

According to FEMA, they "provide three grant programs that offer funding for eligible mitigation planning and projects that reduce disaster losses and protect life and property from future disaster damages.."
