The time is long overdue that the city of Boston remove the statue honoring Christopher Columbus, in the park that also bears his name on Atlantic Avenue.

In light of nationwide protests, multiple attempts have been made to deface and defame the statue - which shows the disdain people have in their hearts for these types of monuments. The homages and remembrance of murderers, rapists and conquerors, rather than those whose very existence they snuffed out with their guns and their diseases, is plainly wrong.

It goes without saying that we might not be here had these conquerors not brought their weapons and their germs to the so-called "New World" - that wasn't new at all - but that does not make it right to honor their genocidal legacy.

We, the undersigned, propose the IMMEDIATE and PERMANENT removal of the Christopher Columbus statue in Christopher Columbus Park in Boston MA, and the IMMEDIATE renaming of the park to honor the very people who called this land home before it was stolen from them. We propose that the Boston City Council and Mayor Marty Walsh work together with the leadership of the Massachusett Tribe to do honor to their legacy.

We cannot re-write history once it's been penned, but we absolutely have the ability to be on the right side now; and we will not rest until our duty is complete.
