Stop the Unnecessary Killing of Deer in Pepperwood

The Issue

Some residents of Pepperwood (a PUD in Sandy, UT) claim there are too many deer in our neighborhood which creates an intolerable nuisance and a potential hazard. They therefore propose the population of deer in Pepperwood be severely reduced. These assertions have been repeatedly made without demonstrated data collection or documentation. Because the Utah DWR has “discontinued its translocation in urban deer program” (Utah Division of Wildlife News, Thursday May 02, 2019), the only remaining option is “lethal removal” (same DWR article). This means killing the deer with hired bow and arrow hunters in the midst of our neighborhood and on the streets of Pepperwood.  Furthermore since deer are migratory, any proposal or plan presented to Sandy City or the DWR/DNR to kill deer should not rest with Pepperwood alone. Pepperwood and the surrounding communities are a deer migration corridor and should be properly studied before any action is considered or approved. Therefore we the undersigned strongly oppose any action to kill deer in our neighborhood as it is not proven to be necessary and poses dangers to residents, children and pets. Instead we propose an education program to inform residents how to live with wildlife.
