I would like to post an update from Neighborhood Cats who shared the following newly released statement from the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Honolulu, August 19, 2020:
Hawaiian Humane has been assured that the Honolulu Police Department will be allowing cat colony managers into otherwise closed parks to manage Free-Roaming cats and trap them for spay/neuter surgery.
Caregivers are required to abide by social distancing guidelines and must wear masks. Colony managers trapping cats for spay/neuter must be actively setting, attending or removing humane cat traps. Colony managers feeding cats must be actively feeding or cleaning up the feeding area and must depart the park as soon as possible.
Hawaiian Humane would like to thank Mayor Kirk Caldwell for his recognition of trap-neuter-return-manage as a public service and Chief Susan Ballard for her compassion toward animals.
A very big THANK YOU to each and every one of you who signed the petition, left comments, called, emailed, sent messages, and tweeted Mayor Caldwell’s office. Also to all the animal rights organizations and advocates who helped to resolve this matter, through our united collective effort, we achieved our goal. The colony caretakers can continue to save cats’ lives and control the population through TNR. Well done, everyone!
