Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Parks Director Toni Robinson: Bodysurfers want event access to Pipeline on the North Shore

Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Parks Director Toni Robinson: Bodysurfers want event access to Pipeline on the North Shore

The Issue

The City of Honolulu Created the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic at Pipeline in February 1971. This Event PREDATES The Pipeline Masters original date by 10 months.

In recent years, the City Department of Parks and Recreation has allowed discrimination of Bodysurfing events to exist by NOT issuing ANY permits for a Bodysurfing event at Pipeline. The holding period for the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic (the original event at pipeline) was given to a New Board surfing event.

Even more recently the city released Draft Permitting rules which will eliminate event diversity from the criteria the Honolulu Parks department uses. If the city eliminates the event diversity criteria, event calendar will likely be completely monopolized by surfing events.

The Honolulu Parks department has never been able to understand how to manage the scheduling conflicts, since it transferred its scheduling responsibilities to the District 4 Office in Kaneohe.

We are asking the Honolulu Parks department to allow a reasonable amount of time for Real and Unbiased mediation PRIOR to forcing its flawed conflict resolution on all ocean sports event applicants.

This is the most effective way to allow for conflicts to be resolved and create a truly representative schedule which will include equal representation of bodysurfing events !
