Petition to Keep The Memorial dedicated to Burton Wragg and Michael Suchar at the Property at 6365 Lake Atlin Drive, San Diego, 92119

The Issue

In 1979, Brenda Spencer opened fire on Cleveland Elementary School, killing Principal Burton Wragg and Custodian Muchal Suchar, and wounding eight students and one police officer.  The students later voted to put up a plaque on that site to those brave men who died leading them to safety.  Many of those students vividly remember the details of January 29th 1979 to this day.

Given that this incident has been referred to as the first mass school shooting, and given that it was immortalized in a pop song, Brenda Spencer's place in history has been cemented.  But it is important when people speak of that day, they not only speak of her, but of the heroes that died saving others.

Now that the property is being sold, the status of the plaque dedicated to those men is unclear.  But it shouldn't be.  These men gave their lives saving a number of small children.  While the district does have another memorial, these men should be honored at the site of their heroism, and the plaque should remain at that location.
