The previous update was about the confusion over the recent Tbnewswatch article published the day after the media release announcing our letter and petition to Mayor Hobbs (posted 2 updates below) . The article was written by Jaime Smith , and published online Nov.11/2015 and also reposted in the update here (1 story below) . It quoted Bare Point operations supervisor, Erin Marcella-Fui ,as saying that the pH was not going to be raised beyond current levels , and that there was therefore no reason for concern. I can not obtain the original quote as the article is no longer up as originally posted.
In the comments section below the article , Thunder Bay Water Watch members communicated that this information about the pH not being raised did not in any way match what we had been told by city officials or what had been published in previous news articles regarding the pH and links to those sources were also given. We contacted Erin Fui with this issue and she acknowledged that a mistake had been made by Tbnewswatch . Erin wrote "I did tell the interviewer to make the revision. The pH 7.8 is the average value for our raw source water from Lake Superior. The treated water leaving the Bare Point Water Treatment Plant ranges in pH from 7.47-8.29. In order for the addition of NaOH to effectively inhibit corrosion, a pH of 9.0-9.6 is required"
Tbnewswatch has since updated and corrected the online article, although there is no mention of this update or edit being made . At present there are still various dates being announced in December and January as the start dates for the chemical to be added. No official word yet on what the correct date this test will begin.
Signatures of opposition are still coming in and are still being collected and will be submitted. Concerned citizens can also email Thunder Bay Water Watch at Tbaywaterwatch@gmail.com .
There have been some media reports and interviews with Thunder Bay Water Watch , on radio , and television, however much of it has been edited to the point that very few of our concerns are well conveyed, or are completely omitted. At this point our concerns are best expressed on the "Letter to Mayor Hobbs" which is posted here previously , now several updates below.
One example of a recent news report is linked here from TBT Newshour , November 10, 2015 . It begins on the video at 4:26- 6:45
Finally it has to be said that the pH level of Thunder Bay water is , at present , with no addition of sodium hydroxide, already at a level which doesn't contribute to the corrosion or worsening of lead leaching . From the very onset the idea of adding this chemical is both an unnecessary expense and risk when our current pH conditions are not a strong contributing factor to the lead issue. Citizens are encouraged to let this be known to Mayor Hobbs , Council, and to the Minister of the Environment, Glenn Murray.
Please keep up your vocal opposition , as well as your questions and concerns, after all , it is you as taxpayers who will be paying for this and will be drinking the water !
