STOP SODIUM HYDROXIDE FROM BEING ADDED TO THUNDER BAY'S DRINKING WATER

STOP SODIUM HYDROXIDE FROM BEING ADDED TO THUNDER BAY'S DRINKING WATER
The Issue
A small number of residents received a simple one page notice from the City of Thunder Bay about an information session on their plan to "minimize the effects of corrosion of lead in our drinking water supply through ph adjustment.”
Very few people received this letter and the great majority are not aware of the plan to begin a test which will affect tap water for Current River residents.
The letter was very misleading ,and likely not to draw any real attention or concern because it did not mention in anyway that THE CHEMICAL SODIUM HYDROXIDE would be added TO OUR DRINKING WATER , in a two year experiment , to determine if raising the pH and reducing the acidity of the water would possibly result in decreasing leaching from old lead water pipes and result in a lowered lead content.
Mayor Hobbs said both publicly and privately, that he does not support this plan ,that he would investigate and try to stop this project , but we are not aware of of any actions to date. No calls were returned from Current River ward councillor Andrew Foulds.
Discussions with a City water analyst revealed that they do not want this experiment to be conducted . It was explained , that this plan is being requested by the Ministry of Environment throughout Ontario, however in regard to Thunder Bay, it is both unnecessary , and an expense tax payers cannot support and it simply does apply not apply to our unique water conditions. Thunder Bay has excellent water quality , a state of the art water treatment plant and we simply do not need this chemical added to our water when we already have a high pH level . Because of these facts, and others, they emphasized that our unique situation in Thunder Bay should be taken into account , and that we should not be grouped in with Southern Ontario by the Ministry of Environment. They feel their hands are tied but are relying on citizen action to stop this project and hope that the citizens of Thunder Bay will put our effort in this direction!
There has also been a letter from the City, received in Current River , requesting that residents have home water testing done but once again the reason for this request , the chemical that they will be adding, and this "experiment" is not ever mentioned in the letter .
There needs to be more transparency in regards to this test on our drinking water. The residents of the affected area need to be fully informed and give their consent for this project to be conducted.
Current River residents will be the first test subjects in this experiment, but the plan is intended to become citywide . We must stop this before it starts , as it is an unnecessary addition of chemicals to our water and ultimately this will affect all of Thunder Bay city drinking water.
