((* PLEASE NOTE- The Tbnewswatch article mentioned here was updated and reedited after this post was written so the original piece is no longer available. A full explanation of this is written in the update following this one , 1 story above)) If you've been listening to the radio or watching the news the past couple of days , you're aware that a letter along with the petition (see previous post ) has been submitted to Mayor Hobbs, City Council and to the Minister of Environment Glenn Murray. There have also been interviews and news stories featuring representatives from the water department. Here is where the confusion comes in . We have been told , since the first discussions on this plan ,that using sodium hydroxide the water pH could be raised as high as 9.6 .This was confirmed many times by the experts and in fact has been a concern for them because a high pH value could compromise the disinfection process. Yet in this article ,posted yesterday , a very different statement is given ; "pH levels would remain around the same that they are now, which at about 7.8 is well within Health Canada's range for safe drinking water. The group had raised concerns that pH levels would increase to around 9.6.It's disappointing because we do try very hard to promote a positive quality drinking water campaign," Marcella-Fui said.We encourage the questions and we discourage the myths." And here is a quote from the same the spokesperson , Erin Marcella-Fui , from an article posted on September 11, 2015 (http://www.cbc.ca/m/touch/canada/thunderbay/story/1.3224860 ) "Marcella-Fui added that the taste of the water won't change when the sodium hydroxide is added, though the pH — a measure of acidity — will rise from 9.0 to 9.6, meaning tap water for affected residents will become slightly more basic." Does anyone else find this very confusing? The city needs to be upfront and tell us the facts. They are conducting an experiment on 600 people who have never given consent, and the rest of the city will follow ...Don't we at least deserve to know what is going on ? We would like to ask any supporters who are following this story , to please post your comments and questions here and on the tbnewswatch article ,linked below, so perhaps we can discover the truth . We have a good chance to pause this test if enough people speak up and make it known that we want to be fully and clearly informed of the details of the plan and affects of this chemical in our drinking water .
