Declare Diwali as a holiday in Canada

Declare Diwali as a holiday in Canada

Diwali symbolizes the "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". We request Government of Canada to recognize Diwali Day as a federal holiday in Canada. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains celebrate this festival across the world. A significant population in Canada which immigrated from India, Fiji, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Guyana, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Singapore, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago celebrate this festival of lights to honour its cultural heritage.
Diwali Day is one of the main and most awaited festival for them throughout the year. This is the time when many immigrants who get a chance, visit their families back home. Diwali is a festival of lights, prayers and togetherness. Diwali is a day to express our gratitude, feed the hungry around us and help the needy ones.
Diwali is a five day festival but celebrated mainly on the third day with prayers, sweets and greetings. Diwali is a day for all relatives, families, friends to get together and share some sweets, laughter and fun. Indian diaspora works in federal and provincial offices and also in private sector. This is a day to be together and they should be given a chance to do so and celebrate.
Canada is a home to many immigrants, and declaring Diwali as a federal / official holiday in Canada will recognize their contribution to Canada with joy and festivities.
We request our Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau to kindly consider this petition and declare Diwali day as an official holiday.
