30-day Garbage to Garden Challenge as a Solid Waste Management Solution
30-day Garbage to Garden Challenge as a Solid Waste Management Solution
The Issue
Food Waste comprises 60% of the garbage being collected in Metro Manila. The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act is already in its 22nd Year. All the information campaigns held in the past did not create lasting changes in behavior.

At the beginning of the pandemic, certain residential areas complained that the lack of collection services created chaos for them.
The 30 Day Garbage to Garden Program took 2 years to be developed by Bokashi Pinoy Founder Lanie Francisco. It was designed to address changes in mindset and behaviors around managing solid waste, particularly food waste at the household and community level.
The "Think Bokashi First" mantra ensures that food waste is segregated properly so that it does not contaminate non-biodegradable waste. Once food waste and yard waste is properly managed, recyclables get sorted and collected "as clean as possible", before it gets to recycling facilities.
The Bokashi Pinoy Starter kit is made of repurposed industrial grade buckets from the Donut and Pharmaceutical Industry, while the container of the fermenter (which is used to treat the food waste) are repurposed PET Bottles. This is also part of the experiential learning program which demonstrates that high-value plastics like industrial-grade buckets and PET bottles have secondary purpose due to their durability, not to mention that both are recyclables.
It has evolved to include other household and community wastes such as yard waste, recyclables (PET bottles in particular), and cooking oil. With the help of volunteer content developers and mentors, the program is now much more structured and easily digestible. This program is targeted at household owners who wanted to learn best practices in household waste management and composting.
We would like to petition to institutionalized the 30-day Garbage to Garden Challenge as an Information and Educational Campaign for Solid Waste Management to target at least 28% of our Cities' population. This will help in meeting the Green House Gas Emission Reduction target that our country promised during the Paris Agreement.
For starters, please help us break the barriers of bureaucracy by sending 60 Leaders from each LGU to take on the 30-day Garbage to Garden Challenge to serve as leadership by example - leaders taking personal accountability for their own household waste.
Once 60 Leaders have finished the challenge - reconvene and provide feedback or reflection as to how it changed their lifestyle and how you think it can be applied to each of your Cities.
The 30-day Garbage to Garden Challenge requires 4 hours of training via zoom, membership to a Group Chat, Facebook Group, and also a Post-Assessment. The cost of the program is P2,020 for each participant but it will be provided to you for FREE. All that is required is your time, your participation, your feedback, and your reflection at the end of the challenge. We need 60 participants from Quezon City and also 60 participants from Pasig. All participants need to have decision-making capabilities on matters about Food Sustainability, Urban Farming, and Ecological Solid Waste Management.
