Problem
The Palliser Trail lands are a rapidly expanding area of Canmore. With an estimated 600 residents between the existing buildings, and more buildings planned in the future, there needs to be a better way for the residents to get into the downtown area by bike or foot.

Solution
A pedestrian bridge in the Palliser area would connect the two sides of Canmore in an efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly way.

Personal story
It takes about 20-25 minutes to walk to the nearest grocery store from the Palliser buildings. If you cross the Highway 1 illegally, that time is reduced to 10 minutes. Based on over 3 months of surveillance and despite the 110km/hr traffic, there is approximately 20-30 people crossing the Highway 1 illegally each day. Imagine how many more people would walk/bike into town with a bridge.

The Palliser area and Canmore have an intentional lack of parking spaces to encourage active living and reduce environmental impact. Without a conveniently accessible pedestrian bridge, that strategy is largely ineffective. A new bridge would give the residents a safer, faster and easier way into town by bike or foot.

A new bridge in the Palliser area would reduce travel time to Canmore Collegiate Highschool for students living in the area, and improve the route for those in Cougar Creek by removing them from the Benchlands Trail overpass. This in turn improves the overall accessibility of the area by removing foot and bike traffic from one of the busiest intersections in Canmore.

A bridge would benefit more than just the Palliser residents. It could be used by the Tipi Town residents to access the Pallsier Dog Park. It could be utilised for athletic training, as it provides a link to already well developed sidewalks and bike trails. It could be used by members of the Jehovah's Witness church, or the new Our Lady Of the Rockies Catholic Church.

A bridge is what the Palliser area is missing to complete Canmore's vision for an active, safe and environmentally friendly town.

Let's make it happen in 2019.
