Get rid of Mount Rushmore

Get rid of Mount Rushmore

The Issue

We cannot continue facing injustice in this country without pointing out the faces that have contributed to this injustice!

Mount Rushmore is a representation of white supremacy, racism, slavery, and stolen American (Native) land. The land in which Mount Rushmore is sitting on was suppose to be permanent American (Native) land in the 1850s. However, when gold was discovered in the land, it turned into an opportunity for people. By orders of President Ulysses Grant, Americans (Native) were not protected which led to bounty hunting of $300 per killing of an American (Native). The artist Gutzon Borglum then worked with the Ku Klux Klan to create his art around the mountain. The carvings were made on land that was taken illegally as the United States vs. Sioux Nation of Indians concluded. The Sioux Americans rejected the court ruling of giving them the price for the land plus 100 years of interest because they want the land back. It is time this country starts doing the right thing and giving them their land back is the bare minimum.

We cannot continue to glorify statues and monuments without acknowledging their representation of discrimination, oppression, systemic racism, and hate. By giving the Sioux Indians their land back, they can then decide on how to dispose of this monument that overlooks their land.
