My name is Sameerah Muhsin, I am starting this petition to raise awareness of the injustice in the criminal justice system. 

My brother Abdul-Rafi Muhsin is doing time at a “reform” school called Summit Academy located in Herman Pa, this facility was entrusted  by parents and family members to care for and correct the behaviors of delinquent children who are products of their environment and have fallen victim to the system by a perpetual stereotype placed on them from birth.  

Abdul -Rafi has been at Summit Academy for 9 months. Due to the poor care shown by staff and faculty, it has been brought to my attention that Abdul-Rafi has contracted Covid-19. Little to no precautions have been taken to prevent the children from being diagnosed with the virus, it wasn’t until 3 1/2 weeks ago when 2 staff members and 1 child were diagnosed, did they start mandating mask. I was made aware that they have only been providing one mask per person and not giving the children a clean mask each day. 

furthermore, the protocols they are taking to prevent the virus are completely INHUMANE!!! The boys diagnosed with the virus are being:

1. Quarantined and confined to their rooms(with closed and locked windows)  for 2 weeks 

2. Given only cold meals 

3. Not being able to go outside

4. Not being given any vitamins or remedies to help fight the virus

 
This situation is not being taken seriously and when we try to contact faculty for answers, no one seems to know anything or is trying to inform us of precautionary measures being taken to ensure the kids safety comes first. 

After the children come out of quarantine, they are placed back in close quarters with kids who are not infected and not being tested a second time before  they leave quarantine. Summit Academy is also not following the guidelines of social distancing, allowing the kids to interact as normal and the staff to come and go as they please. 

Another issue at hand is that there have been some allegations stating that the treatment of the children at Summit Academy is demeaning and abusive, with staff using racial slurs and mentally and physically abusing the kids. 
 

We want justice for Abdul-Rafi and the other boys who are being affected by this ordeal. This is one of many fights we will have to endure, I am aware that this situation is going on all over the United states in many different facilities that profit off of children raised in the hood and a main part of the school to prison pipeline. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!
