Mutual of Omaha: Don't demolish Omaha's landmarked Clarinda and Page Apartments and their historic neighboring buildings!

Save Clarinda-PageOmaha, NE, United States
Created March 27, 2014

The Issue

Mutual of Omaha, a Fortune 500 Company, has been quietly amassing buildings east of their headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. Their stated purpose is to expand on the success of their “Midtown Crossing” development. To achieve that goal, Mutual of Omaha has decided it must demolish multiple historic properties near Turner Park at the intersection of Farnam St. and Turner Blvd.

Two of these properties, the Clarinda and Page Apartments, are listed together as a Local Omaha Landmark. Demolition of these buildings would eradicate the last surviving buildings of the historic Farnam Street commercial corridor.

The designated landmark status of the Clarinda and Page Apartments has put a temporary hold on Mutual's plans. Unless they can get the landmark status rescinded, they cannot tear down the Clarinda-Page buildings.

The local Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission, a board which deals with Omaha’s landmarked buildings, has already voted to retain that landmark status. But since this board does not have regulatory power, the final decision to remove or retain the landmark status rests with the Omaha City Council.

Omaha’s City Planning Department has spoken out in favor of removing the Clarinda-Page's landmark status. Mutual of Omaha's lawyer, Larry Jobean, has been dismissive of the public support, saying the planning department's decision should hold more weight than the voice of the people.

*Update: The City Council will vote on the Clarinda and Page's landmark status Tuesday, July 1. A public hearing will be held the day the vote is taken. We will be submitting the petition count, along with comments you all have provided in the comments section, to the City Council on Friday, June 27. Sign this petition before Friday, June 27 to be sure your voice is included!
