Citizens United Against the Southport, N.C. Sewage Plant

Citizens United Against the Southport, N.C. Sewage Plant
The Issue
The Proposed area for this project encompasses protected wildlife including, Alligators, Fox Squirrels, Red- Cockaded Wood Pecker, Venus Fly Trap, local fish, crabs, oysters, shrimp and Gopher Frogs. Literally hundreds of thousands of Mullet Minnows and Menhaden Minnows swarm these creeks until cold weather drives them out into the ocean. There is a thriving population of wading birds,Marsh Hens, King Fishers, Red- Wing Blackbirds and a variety of songbirds including nesting populations of Painted Buntings. All of this is imperiled by the sewer plant.
We question the wisdom of locating a sewage plant in such an ecologically sensitive area. We also doubt the wisdom of using rapid infiltration (RI) technology (which uses shallow pits to percolate waste water) in an area which regularly receives torrential rains from hurricanes. Florence dropped 27.44 inches on the site where the plant is to be located. Infiltration of nitrogen into this ecosystem is also of major concern.
We are confident that this proposed plant is unnecessary and is an ecological disaster waiting to happen. It is not "if a major spill occurs" but "when and how much".
Please sign this petition and help us win this battle that is being inflicted on all of us but especially our environment.
