Thanks for your support of safe streets in San Mateo and the campaign to lower speed limits around our schools. Despite our success in that campaign, the City of San Mateo is considering removing critical safe streets infrastructure around several schools. Can you help?
On Monday, February 3, at 7p the City Council will consider spending up to $2M to remove the bike lanes around San Mateo High, College Park Elementary, and SM Adult Schools (6,000 students total). These bike lanes allow kids to bike to school separately from car and truck traffic on Humboldt, one of the most dangerous roads in the City. North Central is an equity priority neighborhood with a high volume of car traffic en route to multiple on and off ramps to US 101, the busiest road in the County. Many residents rely on bikes as their sole method of transport given the high cost of buying and maintaining a car. In addition, studies show that lower income, people of color are more likely to face higher death and injury rates for residents who walk and bike.
Please help us convince the City Council to keep the bike lanes and instead spend taxpayer dollars on the long list of safety improvements needed near schools throughout the City:
- Sign our petition
- RSVP for the Council meeting (in person or Zoom)
- Share both with your friends and family who care about safe streets
Thanks for doing your part to help keep San Mateo streets safe, especially around schools.
