SAVE THE RED CAR!

The Issue

ARE WE LOSING ANOTHER ICON?

IS THE RED CAR SLATED FOR TERMINATION?

THE PORT CANNOT FIND A PLACE TO PUT THE RED CAR BACK after the street work is completed on Sampson Way!

You hear it time and time again, from young and old alike.

San Pedro has so much to offer!

For generations we have been struggling with our own identity, our own challenges.  Down town, the Waterfront, it seems like nothing ever changes and nothing gets accomplished.  The fact that the port is finding it difficult to fit the tracks into the Sampson Way Realignment says that it may not come back as it is or at all!

I hope the Red Car (or 'Big Red' as it was called 100 years ago) does NOT get pulled all together.  I hope we don't look back and say it was a great idea and a missed opportunity.

And with no community push it will end up a dusty plan on a shelf!

A woman said at the Harbor Commissioners March 19th meeting….'When we were touring the duck last summer, every time the trolly came, everyone stopped and would take pictures and want to ride the trolly.'

The Red Car has become the icon for access to the waterfront. Like it or not, it has become an icon for our waterfront. Sure it serves a functional purpose when things get crowded, but more than that, it is the first thing people see when they come down here for an event.

We want to make sure that our Mayor, the Port, and our Council Member understand that.

Not only has our San Pedro waterfront plan been long delayed, at a Red Car Update report at the March 19th Board of Harbor Commissioners meeting, Port staff proposed that they have not found a place for the Red Car when Sampson Way is reconfigured to ease future traffic at the Waterfront.  And when this year's lobster festival is over, probably in August the Red Car has a good chance of taking its last passengers forever.
