The Issue
If you leave your pet in a car in hot weather, it could die. Fast. Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car—even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes.Fines for leaving a pet in a hot car are ridiculously low and police treat reports of dogs suffering cars as a low priority.
Manon Lapierre, the co-founder of HotDogZResQ said: “ It all started last Sunday when I saw an old Chihuahua in a car at Place LaSalle mall on Champlain Street. The Chihuahua was clearly suffering and I called the police twice and a stranger called the SPCA and the police and nothing was done. The owners showed up 35 minutes later catching me trying to give their dog water through the slit in the window. I felt helpless until I met others through Facebook who shared my horror that pet owners could be so cruel.”
