South Florida is the “monkey business” capital of the US, and we don’t mean this playfully. There are currently three companies in the Miami area that import and breed monkeys for use in research labs. A recent investigation uncovered the horrifying conditions at their facilities -- these profoundly intelligent animals are being violently handled, denied appropriate medical care, and treated in ways that cause extreme stress and anxiety. And this is all before they’re shipped to labs for a lifetime of painful experimentation.

All of these companies have been fined by the US Department of Agriculture for multiple violations, but their conditions are still deplorable. A fourth facility is set to open unless we act. It is time to end the ability of these companies to profit from cruelty. We are calling on Miami-Dade and Hendry counties to ban the breeding of animals for use in research labs. A ban would shut these facilities down for good.
