How you can help Save John Blumberg Golf Course and Nature Corridor

The proposed sale of the 200 acre John Blumberg Golf Course must be stopped and Winnipeg City Council must take the land off the list of surplus lands.  

There are many reasons for saving John Blumberg Golf Course.

Blumberg’s golf course use and revenue is rebounding; 98% of users come from the City of Winnipeg. Public golf courses are affordable and accessible and offer social, physical, and mental health benefits. In addition there are 40+ acres that can be used for a biodiversity park.

Large greenspaces like Blumberg are green infrastructure and must be part of our strategy to adapt to the climate change crisis; they are proven approaches for reducing climate risks such as flooding and rising temperatures, provide storm water retention and clean air, and that will provide significant long term cost savings. Blumberg also maintains biodiversity by providing necessary habitat for wildlife and endangered species. 

At 6%, the City of Winnipeg is well below the national average of 9% for urban parkland; the sale of John Blumberg will have a negative effect in bringing Winnipeg into line with other Canadian cities.

City Council recently unanimously approved in principle the purchase of an additional 1,000 acres of greenspace. It makes no sense to sell what our City presently owns; the City will never be able to replace such a sizeable access to the river.

The largest planned growth in the City of Winnipeg will be in the west, which will make Blumberg easily accessible for the newest residents of our city.

We need long-term vision for our citizens.

This petition is to demand that Winnipeg City Council keep this greenspace for present citizens of Winnipeg and Manitoba and future generations by taking it off the surplus list.
