Stop Upper East Side Homeless Shelter

The Issue

Fellow upper East sides. It has come to my attention that council man Ben Kallos as well as future council people have been in favor of a homeless shelter opening up January 2022 in the very family oriented neighborhood Yorkville 91/ York Ave.  ONE THE SAME BLOCK IS: the  NYC Elite Gymnastics a children’s gymnastics and birthday party place with children outside waiting to go into CONSTANTLY,  the Art Farm which is a children’s indoor petting zoo. WITHIN ONE BLOCK there is Asphalt Green, the family activity center with many young children walking to and from their sports and recreation ALONE, as well as an all girls swim team DeKovats Park a playground with many young babies and children who  play there.  And the Goddard Preschool of Manhattan. Needless to say the idea to put a homeless with mentally ill, smack dab in the middle of an area with many many children is extremely ignorant and illogical. A homeless man recently CHOKED a 6 year old boy on the Upper East Side. It is not safe to have them wandering around where we families chose this neighborhood for the child-friendly amenities. During the pandemic, we parents rely on the little bit of relief from the fear of the pandemic and overall decline of Manhattan to give our children safe ways to enjoy their activities in our neighborhood. It is unjust and unfair  to say the least, that in this time of the world we also have to be afraid to walk around our neighborhood with our children. Homeless should not get precedence of the residents who pay taxes and maintain this neighborhood with our children. Not one resident I spoke to agreed to this.. and none of us were notified,  only Community Board 8, most of which have ties to the council. Please sign this position to keep our neighborhood safe for our children.
