Petition On Behalf Of Naseer Shaheed And The Unfair Practices Of New York's Legal System

The Issue

On May 17th  2018 A 23 Year old African American Man Named Naseer Shaheed was arrested in connection with an assault after a night of partying with relatives. The circumstances of the assault had yet to be known. Mr. Shaheed a High School Graduate working 2 full-time jobs to help support his Single Mom and 8 siblings had no prior record and was charged with attempted murder and given a $200,000 Bail for release. Unfortunately Mr. Shaheeds limited financial  resources would not permit him to make bail so that he could participate in his own defense remained in custody during his proceedings. Eventually Mr. Shaheed’s Court appointed Attorney Pressured him into taking a plea agreement of 9 years imprisonment under the pretense that there were no other options. Confused, Afraid, and filled with Anxiety of the mounting pressure of being incarcerated for almost a year and no chance of making bail Mr. Shaheed Succumbs to the Psychological Pressure from his Attorney and the prospect of spending countless more years behind bars. With no hope and Mr. Shaheed’s inexperience to the Justice System he  reluctantly accepts the plea deal, Since then Mr. Shaheed has been given more Sound Legal advice and has asked the Court to take back his plea agreement so that he can be given his fair day in Court. Unfortunately the Court has denied his request and he remains in custody on Rikers Island awaiting his sentencing.

We are Petitioning the Judge on Mr. Shaheed’s Case to reconsider her denial of MR. Shaheed’s Motion/Request for  his Plea Agreement to be taken back alleging Ineffectiveness of Counsel on Mr. Shaheed’s behalf. We hope to be granted the reversal of the Plea Agreement so that Mr. Shaheed can receive a fair and impartial trial.
