Make ferrets legal pets in NYC

The Issue

Since 1999 former NYC mayor Rudolph Giuliani passed a law declaring ferrets to be unfit to live with humans because of the threat of rabies at that time. The fear of contracting rabies can easily be solved with the mandating  of vaccines and the licensing of all domestic ferrets, the same procedure that is required of dog owners in NYC. Ferrets pose no greater risk for rabies then a dog or cat. It is a misconception to think that ferrets are more prone to spreading rabies than other animals due to their looks and their relatives in nature (weasels). Ferrets though derived from the weasel family have been domesticated animals since at least 100 years ago. They are low maintenance animals who make great pets for those who need companionship but do not have a lot of time to dedicate as would be needed with another pet. An interesting fact about the jurisdiction of this law is that it is illegal in New York City to own a ferret but it is completely legal to own a ferret in New York State. I believe this law was based off of fear and is completely out dated as it was created over 20 years ago. I believe this law needs to be reconsidered and they of revised effective change can be made. Stand up for the fur friends with me and help to lift the ban and legalize ferrets as pets in NYC. They need us to speak for them since they can’t for themselves, and they want homes ! There is no reason we can’t make their home here in our beloved five boroughs if we reconsider this law while maintaining an open mind and education on the matter.
I hope to get your support as an advocate for the fur friends we love so much. Please help them to have a forever home within ours.
