More Public Toilets for Dover Town

More Public Toilets for Dover Town
The Issue
We residents of, and visitors to, Dover, need more public toilets. We want Dover Town Council (the Mayor and Clerk) to work with Dover District Council to install more real public toilets. We won’t be palmed of with half-measures where cafes, kiosks or shops are paid to allow people to come in and ask to use their toilets, when it is convenient and they are open. Dover has less than half as many public toilets per head of population compared with Deal and Walmer.
If we have more epidemic lockdowns, we need modern self-cleaning toilets. For health reasons. For all ages, toddlers to OAPs. Because historic Dover needs to be a healthy 21st century town too. Levels of walking and cycling have increased dramatically across the UK during the lockdown. More of us Dovorians want to walk and cycle too, but if we have to worry about getting caught short while we’re out, it discourages walking and cycling, or it becomes unhygienic.
Two councillors have asked DoverTC to double public toilet provision in Dover, and have asked Dover Town Council to consider sites in Elms Vale Recreation Ground, West End of Dover Beach, St James Retail Centre, junction of Coombe Rd / London Rd, allotment sites (e.g. Maxton, Prospect Corner), Western Heights, but it will need a public petition for their voice to be heard. You can suggest other locations or comment on our campaign for toilets, by email: GreensinDandD@yahoo.co.uk
Connaught Park Toilets and Stembrook Toilets need to be improved too, and it is difficult to find the Maison Dieu Car / coach park toilets that were promised! More public toilets, and other amenities like a) leafy, living walls to protect school children from car pollution b) outdoor gyms, and c) cheaper buses, will help make Dover a healthier, more climate-friendly town which is less dependent on cars.
We ask the Mayor and the Town Clerk of Dover Town Council to please help Dover to have more public toilets. Petition launched by Keith Sansum and Sarah Gleave
