Mayfly, Assemble!

The Issue

In April 2021, the world was slowly starting to emerge from COVID lockdown. People were desperately trying to find a new kind of normal after almost a year isolated from each other, confined to homes, and unable to travel. Meanwhile, in Seoul, South Korea, a program called Kingdom: Legendary War was assembling six of the best boy groups in K-Pop to perform their hits with new and exciting stages. These performances stunned and amazed, bringing joy to fans all over the world who came together to take part in global voting to crown the ultimate winner in the end.

During the competition, the six groups were split into two larger teams and tasked with creating three new performances for their rap, dance, and vocal units. It was during these episodes that Ateez, Stray Kids, and BTOB came together to form Mayfly, and together, crafted stages that were filled with mind-blowing talent, creativity, and a visceral passion that fans could feel through the screen. The teams clicked creatively like they were fated to work together, and it showed on the stage. Simply put, the performances were unforgettable. Mayfly made magic.

Mayfly’s rap unit, made up of Stray Kids’ producing team 3Racha (Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han), Hongjoong of Ateez, and BTOB’s Minhyuk, got along so well they adopted the name 5Racha. Between the five of them, they wrote and produced “Paint,” a song that wasn’t just catchy, but tackled larger themes of racism and unity. The performance was powerful and immersive, telling a clear story with literal paint and color bombs to help illustrate their point.

The dance unit consisted of five members of Ateez, three members from Stray Kids, and Peniel from BTOB. Like 5Racha, this massive team of dancers seemed to get along exceedingly well, quickly electing sunbaenim Peniel as their leader. The team chose EXO’s “Wolf” to perform, and they were able to show off the unique colors of each member with a kind of ferocious intensity that only they could convey.

The vocal team, Eunkwang of BTOB, Seungmin of Stray Kids, and Jongho from Ateez, came together to perform a cover of IU’s ballad, “Love Poem.” The stage was simple, giving the focus to the flawless blending of their voices in a timeless, emotional performance that left everyone breathless.

The performances were so incredible, that we, the fans (STAY, ATINY, and Melody), would like to respectfully request a Mayfly reunion. We understand that all three groups are currently busy with their own comebacks and have packed schedules for the immediate future. We also understand that a reunion could be a complex undertaking with three different labels involved representing the groups. This petition is merely to illustrate the lasting impact their performances had on the fans and that seeing Mayfly together again would be the K-Pop event of a lifetime. Whatever form the reunion takes is strictly up to the groups and their agencies, but as fans, we wanted team Mayfly to know just how beloved their combined creativity was and how honored we would be to see more from them.

Respectfully Yours,

STAY, ATINY, & Melody

P.S. Should the members of Mayfly read this petition, we would love it if you could grace us with our own fan name!
