The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sooroojdev Phokeer, is not an elected member from the legislative elections.  He has been nominated by the Prime Minister and elected by the majority of parliamentarians who are of the Mouvement Socialist Political Party (MSM). How far his rulings in the parliament have been fair is questionable and it is to the population to judge. Is it not a fact the way he has presided the proceedings of the parliament has given the impression of his bias in favour of the members of the Government who are from the political party he has always belonged? Is it not his habit of suspending and naming the members of the opposition that has given rise to the perception of his biased rulings?

On Tuesday, the 3rd of Auguset he has crossed all limits when he has buffooned the Member of the Opposition, Hon. Rajesh Bhagwan, first member of the Constituency No. 20, Beau Bassin - Petite Riviere.

Hon Rajesh Bhagwan has always been elected for the past 30 years in Constituency No. 20. During the 2019 elections he got 14,829 votes compared to the 7716 votes of L'ENTÉTÉ Jean Francois Gilles of the MSM.

Sooroojdev Phokeer has been a staunch supporter of the MSM since the 1980s. In 2017, he found himself at the center of a controversy in Washington. Giovanni Merle, then employed as the embassy's “Messenger”, accused him of asking him to “cut off his dreadlocks”.

Has he buffooned the sick Hon. Rajesh Bhagwan because of a discriminatory attitude? However he has no right to buffoon a person on the state of his health. A person like him who tarnish the reputation of our temple of democracy has no place there.

Therefore we demand loudly that he should resign from the position of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius.
