The Issue

Nonverbal autistic children are among the most vulnerable members of our community. When they are sexually abused or assaulted, they may be unable to clearly communicate what happened, making it harder for families, schools, and authorities to recognize abuse and seek justice.

This is unacceptable.

Children with autism especially nonverbal children deserve the highest level of protection in schools, therapy settings, transportation services, childcare programs, residential placements, and any environment where they are entrusted to the care of others.

We are demanding immediate action to protect nonverbal autistic children from predators and prevent abuse before it happens.

We call for:

  • Mandatory fingerprint-based background checks for all staff, aides, drivers, therapists, contractors, and caregivers working with children with disabilities.

  • Mandatory reporting to law enforcement and child protective services for any suspected abuse, neglect, or sexual misconduct.

  • Autism-specific training for educators, staff, and caregivers to recognize nonverbal signs of abuse, trauma, and distress.

  • Immediate suspension and independent investigation of any staff member accused of abuse involving a vulnerable child.

  • Stronger criminal penalties for sexual abuse or assault against disabled and nonverbal children.

  • Increased transparency and immediate parent notification when incidents, injuries, restraint, isolation, or allegations occur.

  • The use of safety and accountability measures, including surveillance in legally appropriate settings, transportation safeguards, and documented supervision protocols.

  • The creation and passage of Matthew’s Law, a law dedicated to protecting nonverbal autistic children and ensuring accountability for those who harm them. Our children deserve safety.

  • Our families deserve answers
and predators must never be protected over vulnerable children.

We urge lawmakers, school districts, disability agencies, and law enforcement to act now.

Sign this petition to demand justice, accountability, and stronger protections for nonverbal autistic children.
