To mark international women's day, Mattel has unveiled their latest line of 'Shero' Barbie dolls, a range designed to honour contemporary role models for young girls.

"We proudly honor more role models than ever from around the globe in an effort to inspire more girls," their website claims. And that's great. But most of these dolls are 'one of a kind' editions, simply created for what appears to be purely PR purposes.

Some Shero dolls (Gabby Douglas, Misty Copeland, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Laurie Hernandez) have been made in wide release. Dina Asher-Smith's doll, however, is a one-of-a-kind.

The world and European 200m champion is an outstanding role model for young girls all over the world. Thousands of young girls are reluctant to pursue a career in sports for various reasons. A graduate of King's College, Asher-Smith has shown that it's possible to balance higher-level education with a sporting career. On top of that, she always carries herself with grace, dignity and integrity.

With 2020 being an Olympic year, now is the perfect time for a wide-release Shero doll of Dina Asher-Smith.

(And if this a business decision for Mattel, they should read up on all the dozens of recent surveys that highlight Dina Asher-Smith as one of the most marketable sportswomen in the world.)

"Imagining she can be anything is just the beginning," claims Mattel. "Actually seeing that she can makes all the difference."

Quite right - and what better way of doing that than being in a position to put a Dina Asher-Smith doll into the hands of hundreds of aspiring young athletes.
