Pediatric First Aid courses to be provided as part of antenatal care.

The Issue

24 babies choke to death each year in England and Wales. It is in fact the third most common cause of death for babies.

Now that may not seem like a lot. But to the parents, family, loved ones of those 24 babies, they were everything to them. I want to help reduce that average number by providing first aid knowledge to parents.

After having to use first aid on my 8 week old baby, I was fortunate to have been trained in Pediatric First Aid by my Sister-In-Law while pregnant. So luckily when my daughter appeared to be choking/struggling to bring up her sick, I knew what to do. We were both shook up but she was okay.

However, not everyone has access to such resources and not everyone is as lucky as we were to recover.

It struck me that it's crazy that even the basics (choking and CPR) of pediatric first aid aren't taught to soon to be parents, as part of their antenatal care. Whether it's a 10 minute appointment with a midwife or health visitor before baby arrives or even a run through as part of the discharge process from hospital, after you've just had a baby. It wouldn't take a lot but could be vital to a parent one day.

Therefore I would like the government to work with the NHS to implement a programme where pediatric first aid is taught to pregnant women and their partners. It's important that all parents know how to act, should they ever need to.

This could save numerous lives and a lot of heartache.
