Preserve Old Northern Avenue Bridge, Boston's historic Harborwalk gem!
The Issue
Boston is a city known to the world for its rich history and iconic waterfront, making it one of the ten most popular tourist locations in the country. The Old Northern Ave Bridge is an important marker of the Fort Point Channel District's industrial history, becoming more significant as the Boston Seaport area continues to be developed. This pedestrian bridge is an charming connector on the Boston Harborwalk, utilized by locals and tourists alike for leisure and communting. Recent innovations in lighting design have made the aging bridge an inviting piece in the public walkway along the waterfront.
We urge you to act quickly to find a way to repair the thirteen support beams beneath the Old Northern Ave Bridge and reopen it to pedestrians and a growing number of cyclists.
New York City has created a world-class pedestrian park known as the High Line Park, and Chicago is in its final stages of the Entergy-sponsored track restoration known as the 606 or Bloomingdale Trail. Boston should look to other leading cities as inspiration to facilitate a successful restoration. Finding ways to preserve the bridge may not be easy, but we urge you to find look at grants, corporate sponsorship and creative financing to maintain the history that draws so many to our wonderful city.
