Help promote a solution to Baltimore's poor air quality
Why this petition matters
Maryland residents and our environment have suffered for decades from the unsafe practices of burning waste at trash incinerators. More specifically, the Baltimore Wheelabrator, which is a gigantic trash incinerator located in Southwest Baltimore. It opened in 1985, and continues to run today despite heavy concerns against it. The Wheelabrator is the single source of air pollution in Baltimore City. The incinerator releases thousands of pounds of greenhouse gases and toxins into the air, which impacts not only the environment, but also the people living in Baltimore, especially those living in areas surrounding the facility. Despite the obvious issues, the local government voted to extend its contract with the Wheelabrator company for another 10 years.
In order to combat this issue, the state of Maryland needs to invest in cleaner and more sustainable practices. One solution that will help this issue is the installation of a Plasma Arc Gasification Plant. This type of facility breaks down municipal waste in a contained environment using electricity and extremely high temperatures. It converts inorganic waste into material that can be used within the construction industry, and generates electricity that can be used within Maryland and Baltimore communities.
The unsustainable practices conducted by Wheelabrator are destroying our local and regional environment, as well as disproportionately affecting low-income neighborhoods within Baltimore. We need to implement change immediately in order to stop environmental and social injustice within Maryland. Sign the petition and help create a solution to poor air quality in Baltimore, MD.
