The Issue

Marvel Rivals has built one of the biggest and most passionate communities in gaming. Many of us play this game every day, create content around it, purchase cosmetics, support the developers, and want to see the game continue to grow.

However, there has been a growing amount of frustration within the community surrounding racism, discrimination, the treatment and representation of Black characters, and the way these concerns have been handled.

At this point, we believe NetEase and the Marvel Rivals team need to directly address these concerns and provide the community with a clear response.

This petition is not about attacking the developers or claiming that every decision involving a Black character is automatically racist. It is about recognizing that enough situations have continued to happen that many players now feel there is a larger pattern that deserves to be acknowledged and discussed.

One of the clearest examples has been the treatment of Storm.

When Storm's Sacred Skies swimsuit costume was announced, many players questioned why her costume was released as an Epic while several comparable swimsuit costumes for other characters received Legendary treatment. The criticism became large enough that Marvel Rivals publicly responded and announced that Sacred Skies would eventually receive a free upgrade to Legendary.

That response showed that community feedback can make a difference.

However, the promised Legendary upgrade has still not been implemented. For many players, this has added to the frustration because the community received an acknowledgment and a promise of change, but has yet to see that change reflected in the game.

Storm is also not the only character involved in these conversations.

Players have continued to raise concerns surrounding the cosmetic treatment, promotion, seasonal representation, and overall attention given to Black characters such as Storm, Black Panther, Blade, Cloak, and others.

No single skin, event, or promotional decision proves discrimination. However, when players repeatedly notice similar issues involving multiple characters, those concerns should not simply be dismissed. The community deserves an honest conversation about why these patterns are being noticed and whether anything can be done to improve the representation and treatment of these characters.

At the same time, this conversation goes beyond the characters themselves.

Players have also raised serious concerns about racism and discriminatory harassment within the Marvel Rivals community. Racist language, slurs, targeted harassment, and discrimination should be taken seriously, and players should have a clear understanding of how that behavior can be reported.

Recent questions surrounding changes to the in-game reporting system have made this even more important. Players should not have to guess which category racist behavior falls under or whether reports involving racism are being handled differently than before.

There has also been growing frustration surrounding how conversations about racism are handled within official Marvel Rivals community spaces.

We understand that moderation is necessary and that discussions surrounding racism can become hostile very quickly. Harassment, threats, personal attacks, and discriminatory language should be moderated.

However, preventing harassment and preventing respectful discussion are not the same thing.

Players should be able to raise legitimate concerns about racism, discrimination, representation, and the treatment of characters without feeling that the subject itself cannot be discussed.

Because of this, we are asking NetEase and the Marvel Rivals team to take the following steps:

1. Clearly address racism and discriminatory harassment within the Marvel Rivals community.

Players should have a clear and effective way to report racist language, slurs, targeted harassment, and other discriminatory behavior. NetEase should explain how these reports are handled and what steps are being taken to ensure players can participate in the community without being subjected to racism or discrimination.

2. Publicly address the community's concerns surrounding the treatment and representation of Black characters and explain what steps will be taken to improve it.

We are not asking NetEase to agree with every accusation made online. We are asking the team to acknowledge that these concerns have become widespread enough that they deserve a direct response.

3. Clarify the in-game reporting system for racism, hate speech, and discrimination.

Players should not have to guess how serious forms of harassment are supposed to be reported. NetEase should clearly explain which reporting categories should be used and how reports involving racism or discriminatory behavior are reviewed.

4. Follow through on previously announced commitments, including the promised Legendary upgrade to Storm's Sacred Skies costume.

When the development team publicly responds to criticism and announces a change, players should be able to trust that the commitment will be fulfilled. Following through on those promises is an important part of rebuilding trust with the community.

5. Review moderation practices across official Marvel Rivals community spaces.

Good-faith conversations surrounding racism, discrimination, and representation should be allowed to happen respectfully. Harassment, threats, slurs, and targeted abuse should be moderated without making legitimate discussion of these issues unnecessarily difficult.

6. Provide the community with clear and concrete steps explaining what will change moving forward.

Statements are important, but the community also wants to see action. Players should understand what Marvel Rivals intends to do differently and how these concerns will continue to be addressed in the future.

We are asking for communication, accountability, and meaningful change.

We also encourage players who share these concerns to make their voices heard through official feedback channels, social media, community discussions, and honest reviews on platforms such as Steam.

If players believe these issues have negatively affected their experience with Marvel Rivals, they have every right to express that experience honestly in their reviews. Those reviews can remain in place until those individual players personally feel that NetEase has meaningfully addressed the concerns being raised.

The purpose of this campaign is not to harass developers, artists, moderators, community managers, or other players. Threats, personal attacks, and harassment have no place in this effort.

The goal is to show that members of this community care enough about Marvel Rivals to expect better from it.

Many of us want to continue supporting this game. We want Marvel Rivals to succeed. We want players to feel respected within the community, and we want Black characters to receive the same level of creativity, care, and attention that has made so many other characters in this game special.

Marvel Rivals has already shown that community feedback can lead to change.

We are asking NetEase to listen again.

If you share these concerns, sign this petition and make your voice heard.
