Make Franklin Richards Mutant Again: Why The Mutant Metaphor is ruined by Dan Slott
The Issue
We, the devoted followers of Marvel comics, are deeply against to this atrocious retcon. We had enough when Marvel change the Maximoff's origin and now they wanted to do it again to one of Marvel's key characters, Franklin Richards.
The "Mutant" metaphor can stand in for a lot of different identities depending on how you look at its context and generally this made the stories much more interesting and felt more connected to the readers. This metaphor represent different minority groups and marginalized communities in the real world. The retcon is offensive from the standpoint of every possible translation on that metaphor.
To put in perspective:
"Franklin Richards thought that being part of an oppressed minority was cool so he subconsciously pretend to be a member. "
We agree that twists are needed to make the story move forward, but not in this direction. Moira MacTaggert's retcon is a great example of how changing history can be benificial rather than reductive to the story. Franklin Richard's retcon persecuted a lot of identity representation and story potential.
Mutant stories have always been a way of exploring the struggle of being yourself, and the community that you discover along the way. Writers suddenly claiming that this or that mutant is actually not a mutant undermines that process entirely. It was never okay to erase someone's identity.
When you hurt a community you don't just block and gaslight them. You need to listen.
We believe that the writers of Dawn of X can do better.
