Nicholas Summers started this petition to Marshalltown City Council

The open-burning of yard-waste is a detriment to both the environment and human health. The burning of leaves, brush, grass, and most plant matter produces particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and benzapyrene. Particulate matter can become embedded in lung tissue and cause premature death and negatively affect individuals that have heart conditions or that are asthmatic. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous for children, the elderly, smokers, and those with chronic heart and lung disease. Benzapyrene is a known carcinogen in humans and animals that is produced by leaf smoke. These pollutants produced naturally by plants and leaves are not the end of the story, pesticides used in yard maintenance can also produce dangerous chemicals such as dioxins, known carcinogens that can damage human health in small concentrations. Dioxins bind to the fat in animals and move their way up the food chain, meaning that an individual does not only need to breathe contaminated air to come into contact with these dangerous pollutants.

Marshalltown has already banned the open-burning of garbage but has left this dangerous loophole open. We need to demand that the city council adopt a policy on open-burning that closes it. Marshalltown already has an effective and cheap alternative in its composting center. This is a change that is not only practical but beneficial for everyone living in the city.
