Market of Choice, adopt the Better Chicken Commitment!

The Issue

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and I have shopped at Market of Choice, my local grocery chain, for as long as I can remember. When shopping at natural stores, most of us assume that we’re voting with our dollars and supporting more ethical industry practices. While Market of Choice does offer many local, organic, and eco-friendly products, they have room for improvement. By sourcing broiler chickens from larger, industrialized farms, Market of Choice is choosing to support cruelty, rather than becoming part of the solution.

On industrialized poultry factory farms:

  • Chickens are bred to grow unnaturally large at a rapid rate, causing painful leg deformities, organ failure, and heart attacks.
  • Thousands of birds are crammed together into crowded, dirty, ammonia-laden environments and suffer from a range of health issues as a result.
  • Nearly all US slaughterhouses employ the “live-shackle” method when killing chickens, which is objectively inhumane. Oftentimes, birds are fully conscious throughout the gruesome slaughter process.

These are just a few examples of what some chickens endure in Market of Choice’s poultry supply chain. As intelligent, sentient animals, chickens deserve better.

That’s why I invite you to join me in telling Market of Choice that it’s time to do what’s right and sign onto the Better Chicken Commitment

The Better Chicken Commitment addresses the most egregious abuses that chickens raised for meat endure on a daily basis. As a natural grocer known for sourcing more eco-conscious products, Market of Choice should also adopt higher animal welfare standards.

Please join me by signing and sharing this petition with your friends and families. Together, we can urge Market of Choice to do better for animals and for customers.
