In traditional print and broadcast media, false advertising is ordinarily removed or flagged and questioned. There are legal departments set up solely for this purpose.
On Facebook, they refuse to screen or delete advertising that proves false or misleading when it comes to certain things like Trump's ad campaign targeting Biden.
It is time social media advertising adheres to the old "truth in advertising" guidelines.
Opinons are one thing, flagrantly publicizing false advertising to an instant audience of millions is irresponsible and dangerous. They are encouraging, what has already been proven, how easily Russia has been able to spread many millions of dollars in fake and inaccurate misinformation campaigns. As witnessed, so many to this day, believe the contents of those campaigns. Once a lie hits social media, there is no way to retract it from the minds of unsuspecting audiences. The damage is done.
No matter what your political stance, we cannot let this continue to set a precedent.
