Remove the statue of Robert E. Lee from the Crypt at the U.S. Capitol.

Last summer I took a tour of the US Capitol and during that tour my niece (an intern tour guide) took my son and I to the Crypt.

The Crypt is a special place within the underground labyrinth of the Capitol that is a collection of statues from the 13 original colonies that BEST REPRESENTS THAT STATE. I was absolutely horrified to see that Virginia’s statue is of Robert E. Lee!

Who thought this was the best representative of the State of Virginia’s history? There have been 8 Presidents of the United States that were born in Virginia; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachery Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Surely one of those presidents would have been a better representation of the State of Virginia vs the president of the Confederacy. They added this statue in 1934! Virginia chose a person from the late 1800’s vs a person from the time 13 Colonies were founded.

The U.S. Capitol serves as home to our democracy and should NOT have a divisive figure such as Robert E. Lee serve as one of its crowing members. Robert E. Lee was the ambassador for an institution that treated millions of people as property and not as humans.

Please sign this petition to remove this mockery of Virginia and the Untied States’ history from the Crypt and replace it with a better representative of Virginia.
