Co-name Crenshaw Business Corridor “Malcolm X Blvd”

The Issue

Led by FA-MLI Inc., and a broad coalition of local business leaders, property owners, and residents, we urge our councilmembers to join us in honoring the legacy of human rights advocate, Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz), by adding his name to a 5-mile stretch of Crenshaw Blvd.

Starting at the I-10 freeway (Imagine that freeway exit sign), Malcolm X Blvd. will advance south, intersecting Obama Blvd, West Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Nipsey Hussle Square (At Slauson Ave.), ending at West 79th St. Martin Luther King Jr. representing the dream, Obama, the progress and Nipsey Hussle, the promise in our youth, all connected by Malcolm’s strength and dedication.

As is the case in Harlem NY, a sign reading “Malcolm X Boulevard” would simply be joined with Crenshaw Boulevard. Honoring one of our most significant heroes in this way will highlight the cultural significance of the area without taking anything away from the iconic stature Crenshaw Blvd. currently holds. Both names would be respected by the U.S. Postal Service.

As our political climate is changing, we believe the legacy of Malcolm X offers the world a unifying symbol of redemption, courage and speaking truth to power (Attributes he demonstrated throughout his personal evolution as a man, as a father, as a husband, and as a human rights activist). And what better way could we honor two of our greatest heroes, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, than to unite them in the heart of L.A.’s Black cultural district.  The significance of Malcolm X demands the significance of Crenshaw Blvd.
